Canada is beautiful, eh! Right now is especially a great time to be proud of Canada. Just as we have gotten a new Liberal Prime Minister in charge of our country, we have also been listed as the “freest” country on the planet according to a prosperity index published by the Legatum Institute. Alright, so we may not be quite as prosperous as we once were but we’ll get there.
There are many Canadian wilderness tours to go on as well. Some of the activities you can find up in the Great North are almost too Canadian to be true. Especially to some of our American or European brothers and sisters who may rarely or never have seen real snow. To us Canadians who are familiar with it all too well, snow can be fun or it can be burdening, often depending on the situation. It’s awesome for snow sports, but having it piled as high as your chest can make getting in your car incredibly difficult.
Seeing how much we love snow, here are 5 awesome Canadian wilderness adventures you can go on that involve the cold, white powder.
- Dog Sledding
You can go dog sledding more often in certain Provinces compared to others. But for a great adventure, go dog sledding in the winter. Most dog sledding outfitters offer short day trips or the option of extended overnight adventures. You’ll be able to go all over Canada and see our Arctic, Rockies, and even reach Ontario’s Algonquin Park.
- Cat-Skiing
Perhaps best for more advanced skiiers, Cat-Skiing is downhill skiing that goes off-trail. There are no ski lifts, instead you access the areas with a snowcat. No, that’s not a wild animal taking you around to locations. Find a Cat-Skiing outfitter that offers a beautiful lodge and you are golden!
- Heli-Skiing
It’s just like Cat-Skiing, except instead of a snowcat taking you to your location, you go by helicopter. This activity offers an extra special view they’ll see of our Rockies, for example. This type of skiing is most prevalent in Alberta and British Columbia. You’ll be skiing down alpine glaciers and bowls, and around gladed trees. Enjoy!
- Snowmobiling
Some people outside of Canada know the thrill of snowmobiling. If you’ve never been, think of it as ATVing with skies and a motorized track instead of wheels, on top of snow. What’s great about it is exploring Canada’s wilderness. Outfitters will teach the basics to novices and offer different plans according to your skill level.
- Mountaineering
Similar to rock climbing. Experts will go with you to teach you mountain climbing techniques. British Columbia may have the best locations for this Canadian wilderness adventure.
Whatever adventure you decide on, be safe, eh!
